Cardiothoracic Surgery

Cardiothoracic Surgery Photo

The medical specialty of cardiothoracic surgery focuses on the surgical management of organs located within the thoracic cavity, typically the heart (heart disease), the lungs (lung illness), and other pleural or mediastinal structures.

Cardiothoracic surgery is typically further subdivided into cardiac surgery (which deals with the heart and great vessels) and thoracic surgery (involving the lungs, esophagus, thymus, etc.). Cardiothoracic surgeons perform surgery on conditions that affect the organs inside the chest as well as the skeletal and connective tissues that composes the chest cavity.
